A day in the life of a real estate professional across the Kawarthas and Highlands isn't just about unlocking doors or putting up signs. It’s about staying deeply connected to the land, the local communities, and the infrastructure that shape our everyday life. Here is a look at what went down today and how keeping a close eye on our region protects your lifestyle and investments.
Out on the Trails and the Open Road ππ²
The morning kicked off bright and early with a quick review of the day's notes before heading out for a refreshing trail walk with my wife Susan and our dog Jax πΆπ£. After getting ready, it was time to fire up the truck and hit the road to tackle a busy daily route spanning Peterborough and our local lake communities.

My first stop brought me straight into Peterborough π️. I headed down to capture photos of the Maria Street Bridge—a key local infrastructure point that will soon be closed for a full year of rehabilitation. Monitoring regional bridge repairs, municipal roadwork, and detour routes may seem like small details, but local access directly impacts everyday commute times, neighbourhood accessibility, and property values across the county.
While in town, I also snapped fresh photos of Park Street Park, dropped by Fontaine’s to sharpen my daughter Faith's hockey skates π⚡, and grabbed gas at Curve Lake before driving out to the cottage.
Out at the water, it was all about seasonal maintenance πͺ. I hauled in and put away our tin boat, covered the motor, secured the tarps, and wrapped up essential grounds maintenance to keep everything protected before the cold weather sets in ⛵π. On the drive home, I pulled over along Paudash Lake just in time to capture stunning sunset photos across the water π πΈ.
Local Headlines That Impact Our Community π°
Staying on top of local governance and regional news is a vital part of serving our clients. Here are the key stories shaping our area right now and how they touch our market:
Paramedic Strike Deadline Extended π: Good news for emergency coverage across Peterborough County, Curve Lake, and Hiawatha First Nations. The Ontario Labour Relations Board extended the strike deadline to November 13 while negotiations continue, ensuring 100% active emergency response services remain fully operational. Reliable emergency services are a foundational pillar for rural and waterfront living confidence.
Peterborough Executive Restructuring π️: Following a municipal efficiency review, the City of Peterborough streamlined senior leadership by reducing operational departments from five down to four to save municipal costs. Trimming administrative overhead helps stabilize long-term municipal budgets.
Historic Regional Cold Case Trial ⚖️: Trial dates have been set for January regarding the 1991 homicide of Angelien Josephine Quesnelle, whose vehicle was originally discovered near Highway 620 east of Coe Hill in North Hastings.
Honouring Local Youth Hockey Leaders π: The Kawartha Komets special needs hockey program hosted a moving tribute at the Miskin Law Community Complex to honour founder Carol Fisher, celebrating a league that now supports 65 local players. Strong community programs make our towns places where families want to plant roots.
π‘ Real Estate Market & Value Impact: What It Means for You
As local municipal policies shift and seasonal changes set in, here is how today’s key developments impact local property values:
Infrastructure & Detours (Maria Street Bridge) π: Extended bridge closures and road rehabilitations alter local traffic flows. While short-term construction can add minutes to daily commutes, long-term infrastructure upgrades protect surrounding neighbourhood residential values and keep municipal access strong.
Seasonal Cottage Maintenance & Asset Protection π: As we wrap up dock removals, boat storage, and winterizing waterfront properties across Paudash Lake, Chandos Lake, and the Kawarthas, proper seasonal care prevents costly freeze-thaw damage. Maintaining water systems and shorelines safeguards home equity when it comes time to list.
Navigating Municipal & Zoning Rules π: From zoning changes and environmental setbacks to municipal cost shifts (like OPP policing budgets affecting local tax rates), rural and waterfront real estate requires specialized local knowledge. Uninformed decisions on zoning or septic compliance can result in lost equity or unexpected buyer friction.
Protecting Your Real Estate Journey π‘π‘
Navigating rural real estate, waterfront cottages, and acreage properties across the Kawarthas and Highlands comes with unique challenges. Whether it’s understanding complex municipal zoning changes, managing septic and shoreline regulations, or knowing when to hold or adjust market positioning during seasonal shifts, making uninformed choices can lead to costly mistakes and lost equity.
